Welcome. I’m glad you have found your way to my small corner of the vast web.
I’m an artist, writer and teacher. My work is about deepening connection to ourselves, one another and the wider web of life, and is rooted in the belief that justice and joy go hand in hand.
Please sign up to receive my newsletter where I share thoughts about living a creative, spiritually and socially engaged life.
Here’s a bit more about about my professional background.
Across an eclectic career spanning the arts, activism, social enterprise and government, I have always been committed to developing more imaginative responses to our most challenging concerns. I have taught creativity and change-making for over twenty years and held leadership positions in some of the most creative institutions in the world.
I was the Co-Founder and first Director of The School of Life, and before that Curator of Public Programmes at Tate Modern. I was also the Faculty Lead at Year Here for a decade, and a Special Advisor on Social Action in the Number 10 Policy Unit.
I am the author of several books including Looking at Trees (2023), The Mindful Photographer (2022), Family Photography Now (2016) and Street Photography Now (2010). I have commissioned and created many other books and love to collaborate with artists and activists in making meaningful publications.
With my partner Sarah, I run Turadh, a social enterprise offering places of reset and renewal to those working on the frontlines of justice, equality and environmental security in Scotland.
I live between the city and the sea, avoiding the 9-5 and following the rhythms of birds and tides. I am supported by practices that emphasise insight, presence and compassion, and offer my creativity in service to all life on earth.
